There are several common hair mistakes that brides make on or before their wedding day. To help you look your best, we’ve compiled a list of important do’s and don’ts for your big day.

Don’t make a radical change
We’ve all had it happen…that terrible cut, the wrong color. As your wedding day approaches, it’s not the time for impulsive decisions or risk taking. If it’s too short or just not right, there’s no time to grow it out. Any color work should be at least two weeks prior to your big day, so it has time to “settle down.”

Do find a hairstylist with specialized experience
Wedding and event hair requires skill and practice. Not all stylists have this expertise.

Do plan a test run
Practice your hairstyle, at least once, before the event. Does it hold? Do the curls go flat? Does your wedding updo fall apart? A practice run allows you to troubleshoot.

Do consider “the height effect”
Updo’s will make you look taller. If you’re already as tall as, or taller than the groom, high heels and updo’s might be too much.

Don’t overdo it
If your hairstyle is too big or flamboyant, it will compete with your face and dress. You’re better off with a look that says “elegant simplicity.”

Do consider degrees of formality
Definitely match your hairstyle to your gown. You want a harmonized look. If you’ve chosen a garden wedding and more casual dress, avoid a tight, formal hairstyle. If you’ve planned a formal event, your hairstyle should be, too.

Don’t do your hair too early
You don’t want it to droop, get messy or, yikes, fall apart. The looser, “down” hairstyles have a tendency to quickly droop. Better to start a bit curlier and let it relax.

Do use extensions and hairpieces
Some hairstyles require a bit more than nature provided. Using hairpieces and extensions is a great way to add the extra volume, length, and thickness to get the look you want.

Don’t overdo it with hair product
There’s a tendency to use too much product for hold, with the intent to secure your style for a long day. Too much gel and spray make the hair heavy and greasy. Spray hairspray in small amounts from a distance and then, gradually add more. It’s better to add layers of spray than spray too much in one spraying.
